"Christchurch has a proven track record for hosting a wide array of successful events and with the support of Christchurch City, the people, and the infrastructure it has all the right ingredients for a World Class event. The lasting legacy of the event will have a significant impact
on the participation of disabled people in sport and the future of Paralympic sports in New Zealand”, said Fiona Pickering, Chief Executive Officer of Paralympics New Zealand, and a board member of IPC Athletics World Championships Limited, the company set up to manage the event.
IPC Announcement
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) announced the winning bids for the 2010 IPC World Championships in Athletics
and Swimming in November 2007 from Seoul, Korea.
“I congratulate Christchurch and Eindhoven for their respective selections and extend our sincere appreciation to the bid authorities from Barcelona and Minneapolis for their significant efforts," said Sir Philip Craven, IPC President.
"It was a hard decision for the IPC Governing Board. During the bid process, we saw strong presentations and commitments from all bid authorities. The IPC is sure that the selected cities will ensure great and exciting Championships and promote Paralympic Sport in its best way",
he added.
