Welcome to the official website of the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships.
This event will for the first time be held outside of Europe and New Zealand is very proud to be given the opportunity to host the world’s second biggest sports event for athletes with a disability.
Christchurch is a city of just over 400,000 people. Visitors for this event will receive a typical warm, friendly welcome. You will find the city one of the best in the world for accessibility.
The over-whelming local and central governmental support and joint commitment by all parties including Athletics New Zealand towards hosting the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships has been fundamental in securing the event in New Zealand. NZ Major Events, SPARC and Christchurch City Council have given considerable support and financial investment to support the successful rights to host the event.

Neil Blanchfield, of GreatEvents Limited in Christchurch will manage the event. Neil has been heavily involved in winning this event for New Zealand and Christchurch.
GreatEvents has an excellent record of
event management in Christchurch, having been involved in the World Golden Oldies Rugby Festival, two World Wheelchair Games, IPC Swimming World Champs, FINA World Masters Swimming Championships, World Firefighters Games, Boccia World Cup and World MaxiBasketball
Championships.
This event will include track and field events for athletes with a disability such as amputees, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy and the visually impaired. The event will be staged at the QEII Stadium and a second temporary training track will be in place for the championships.
